    How do I find a spare part for TS enclosures without exploded diagrams?

    On some TS enclosures have spare parts exploded diagrams and others do not. You can verify spare parts by contacting our support team directly or by contacting your distributor.

    Are casters compatible with a steel plinth?

    Yes, casters may be used in conjunction with a plinth using the plinth adapter 8800290.

    Are casters compatible with a Flex-Block plinth?

    No, casters are not rated to be used with Flex-Block plinths although leveling feet are acceptable.

    Can I stack two plinths on top of each other?

    We recommend any two plinths to be stacked a maximum of 300mm (12”) high.

    We have lost the end caps for our plinth. Can we purchase just the end caps?

    Yes, the caps 86011×0 are available to purchase. These can be found on page 431 of North American Catalog 34.

    How do I fix the TS enclosure to the floor?

    Fixing methods will vary depending on enclosure base (solid or gland plate with base pan), bolt type (standard or Hilte), installation method (crane or forklift), access (inside or outside the enclosure), type of plinth/base (floor stand kit, steel plinth, flex block plinth, seismic plinth, no plinth, etc), and cable management options selected. With all of these variables it is difficult to make recommendations, however the most popular installations include:

    • Plinth exterior installation – remove decorative end caps.
    • Plinth interior installation using 2817000 brackets.
    • No-plinth installation using the hole in the base pan reinforced with 8800830.
    How do I bay two TS enclosures together and maintain my UL rating?

    When baying two or more Type 12 or 3R TS enclosures the following combination is required to maintain the UL type rating between each set of two enclosures:

    Four corner brackets (8800430).
    A minimum of two clamps spaced no more than 110cm apart on the vertical seams. We suggest the use of 3 clamps per side evenly spaced. We also recommend the use of 8800500 quick-fit baying clamps although any style of vertical clamp can be used.
    Baying gasket and brackets installed according to assembly instructions. The baying gasket should be installed starting from the middle of the bottom frame member and applied continuously, without breaks, around the perimeter of the frame opening until reaching the starting location.

    When baying two or more Type 4 or 4X TS enclosures the use of a Type 4 or 4X suiting kit is required. All clamps provided in the kit must be installed according to assembly instructions.

    How do I bay two TS enclosures together with a divider panel between them?

    The quick-fit baying clamps normally recommended for baying will interfere with a divider panel. In place of these we recommend 8800470 although 8800410 flat baying clamps or 8800490 exterior baying clamps may also be used. Note, the four corner brackets, 8800430 are still necessary.

    Is it possible to bay two TS enclosures with seismic kits?

    Yes, we have a solution to maintain a NEMA 12 rating, however the enclosure assembly may not be labelled UL Type 12 since there is no room for the installation of corner baying brackets.

    Is it possible to bay a TS to a PS enclosure?

    Yes, the two frame types can be bayed using the recommended baying brackets: 4582500.

    How do I lift two or more bayed TS enclosures?

    There are four recommended methods for lifting TS enclosures.

    1. Use combination brackets 4540000. One combination bracket takes the place of two eyebolts allowing the lifting load to be split between two vertical frame members. This is most useful when lifting three enclosures at a time.
    2. Line up all eyebolts down both sides of the enclosure. Insert a steel pipe through all the eyebolt holes, and lift from the pipe.
    3. Attach a harness or sling to the eyebolts at end and middle of suite, and lift from the eyebolts. The greater distance between the eyebolts and the lifting point will decrease stress on the eyebolts allowing greater weight to be lifted.
    4. If a transportation plinth is being used, then running a chain or cable through the pre-installed pipes in the plinth, and lifting from the chain.
    What is the weight capacity for a TS enclosure?

    The maximum weight capacity for a single freestanding TS enclosure is 14000N (3150 lb.). Capacities for suited enclosures and different lifting methods will vary. All loading capacities can be found in the loading brochure available for download on

    What is the weight capacity of a TS mounting panel?

    A mounting panel in the rear most position, flush within the frame, has the capacity of 1340 lb. Any other position within the enclosure and the capacity of the mounting panel is 1120 lbs. Documentation.

    What is the weight capacity of the TS doors, side walls, and rear walls?

    The loading capacity for each is 200 lb. Documentation.

    What are the weight capacities of steel plinths or flex blocks?

    The weight capacity is equal to the capacity for a single freestanding TS enclosure – 14000N (3150 lb.).

    What are the weight capacities of TS accessories such as swing frames, chassis bars, and other support rails?

    What is the maximum size of a UL Type 12 TS?

    The maximum size a single door TS may be labelled for Type 12 is 2200 x 1000 x 1200 mm (HxWxD). The maximum size a double door TS may be labelled for Type 12 is 2200 x 1800 x 1200 mm.

    Can a viewing door be added to a TS and retain its Type 12 rating?

    No and yes. UL has approved the use of 8610.xx5 viewing doors for Type 12, however this door will not come equipped with a Type 12 label. Since the factory location for labels is on the door, this means that a field installation of a 8610.xx5 viewing door will result in an enclosure with no label. Factory installations where Rittal Corp is assembling the enclosure will can be equipped with the proper UL Type 12 label.

    I am installing a disconnect handle on a TS FMDC enclosure, what parts will I need?

    The FMDC enclosure will come standard with a hardware kit (with instructions) which will interface with your handle directly.

    In a 1200mm (48”) wide TS enclosure, can I install two narrower 600mm (24”) wide mounting panels side by side?

    Yes, this can be accomplished using an 8800200 width divider. Likewise one 1600mm (63”) TS enclosure can accommodate two 800mm (32”) wide panels using this same accessory.

    Can I install two different sized mounting panels within one TS enclosure?

    Yes, two different sized panels can be installed with the use of 45x88mm rails installed in the top and bottom of the frame. This rail will perfectly divide the enclosure in two sections but will interfere with gland plates so it is imperative to use a solid bottom.

    Can I install a full size mounting panel in the side of a TS enclosure that has the standard full size panel already in place?

    I have two bayed enclosures but need a continuous mounting panel. What can I recommend?

    Mounting panel infills (459x.700) can be used to close the gap between bayed panels or a full size mounting panel equal to the bayed width of the enclosures may be used.  If using a full size mounting panel, installation from the front or rear of the enclosure will not be possible.  As such it is recommended to utilize 8802.2×0 slide rails to assist with side installation.

    I’ve lost some hardware to install a TS mounting panel. Can I order more?

    Yes, part 8684991 will include all of hardware necessary to install a TS mounting panel including the mounting panel slide blocks (feet) and upper and lower retaining brackets.  The lower slide rails are not included but can be purchased, 86122×0. Rittal North American Catalog.

    Do you offer standard enclosures which are EMI/RFI shielded?

    Freestanding TS enclosures pre-configured for increased RF attenuation are available off-the-shelf in limited sizes (2000x800x600 and 2000x800x800).  Additional enclosures and sizes are available by special request.  VDE certification can be found here.

    What is the difference between an EMI/RFI shielded TS enclosure and a standard TS enclosure?

    The frame is carbon steel with an alu-zinc coating.  The roof, door, and rear wall is carbon steel with an alu-zinc coating and powder coated on the outside (inside is unfinished).  Parts are sealed with a wire-mesh gasket.

    What is the maximum size of a UL Type 3R TS?

    The maximum size a single door TS may be labelled for Type 3R is 2200 x 1000 x 800 mm (HxWxD).  The maximum size a double door TS may be labelled for Type 3R is 2000 x 1800 x 800 mm (note this double door will require a special roof).

    What is the difference between a Type 12 TS and a Type 3R TS?

    The Type 3R version has a powder-coated frame for extra corrosion resistance.

    Are there special sidewalls to achieve UL Type 3R?

    No, standard sidewalls may be used.

    Can a UL Type 3R TS be equipped with a flange disconnect?

    No, there is currently no Type 3R flange disconnect solution.

    What is the maximum size of a UL Type 4 TS?

    The maximum size a TS enclosure may be labelled for Type 4 is 2000 x 800 x 800 mm (H x W x D).

    What is the difference between a Type 12 TS and a Type 4 TS?

    The UL Type 4 TS will have the following differences:

    • Powder-coated frame
    • Internal fastened roof
    • Internal fastened base plate with no gland plates
    • Different eyebolt gasket/washer.
    • Rear wall stiffener
    • Screws installed with Loctite
    Can a double door TS be rated UL Type 4?

    No, however it is possible to suite two single door Type 4 enclosures together and use a full size mounting panel.  The full size mounting panel will need to mount using slide rails (8802.2×0) and be installed from the side of the enclosure suite.

    Are there special sidewalls to achieve UL Type 4?

    Yes, 800D sidewalls have additional stiffeners.  Regular sidewalls may be used for 600D.

    Can a UL Type 4 TS be equipped with a flange disconnect?

    No, there is currently no UL Type 4 flange disconnect solution.

    Can I put a viewing door on my TS enclosure and keep my UL Type 4 rating?

    No, because the viewing doors are only rated at a Type 12.

    Can a Type 12 TS be upgraded to Type 3R or Type 4 in the field?

    No, UL Type 3R and 4 enclosures have powder-coated frames for extra corrosion resistance.

    Can a TS enclosure be wall-mounted?

    No the TS frame was designed for freestanding installation.  As such, the strength is limited to vertical loads.  Wall-mounting can only be achieved thru the use of user-supplied heavy duty angle brackets which allow the enclosure rest on its feet.

    How are TS enclosures grounded?

    All of the TS enclosure skin panels (roof, door sidewalls) feature installation hardware with automatic bonding to the TS frame, providing a contact resistance of less than 0.1Ω.  Additionally the skin panels (roof, door, sidewalls) and mounting panels feature ground studs that allow for the connection of straps or cables.  We recommend any skin panel which has live electrical equipment mounted to it be grounded via an appropriate size conductor.  Furthermore we recommend the door to be grounded regardless since an external contaminant (oil, dirt, etc.) could affect the continuity.  More information regarding the grounding/bonding of TS enclosure skins and accessories can be found here:

    Have the TS enclosures been tested for transportation?

    Yes, the following tests were performed:

    • Third party testing to International Safe Transit Association ISTA 1B-1H standards. o ASTM D4169 random truck vibration o 30 degree out-of-phase oscillatory vibration o Impact/handling test
    • Additional testing to DIN 60068-2-6.
    Are replacement parts available for TS FMD enclosures?

    How does the isolator door cover work?

    The isolator door cover (a.k.a. disconnect module or sidecar) is designed to convert a standard TS enclosure into a FMD style enclosure.  It can be installed on the left or right side of a TS enclosure but only on the end (it is not possible to suite) and only on a single door enclosure (not compatible with double door).  A mounting panel infill may be installed to increase the internal mounting panel surface.

    What parts are necessary to interlock several TS enclosures in a master/slave configuration?

    The parts necessary to interlock depend on the type of enclosure and disconnect used.  Below are the various options.

    • Old single or double door FMD – These enclosures are equipped with interconnect kit 8611310 which includes operating mechanism 4912000.  So the only parts necessary to interlock are the adjacent door lock 4911×00 and interconnecting rods 49xx000.
    • New single door FMD or standard enclosure using a rotary disconnect or isolator door cover – To interlock these enclosures it is necessary to order the 4912000 operating mechanism in addition to the adjacent door lock 4911×00 and interconnecting rods 49xx000.
    • New double door FMD – This enclosure is equipped with operating mechanism 4912000.  So the only parts necessary to interlock are the adjacent door lock 4911×00 and interconnecting rods 49xx000.
    What are the most common tools used to work with and assemble a TS enclosure?

    It is recommended to have a power drill however a ratcheting wrench may also be used.  The other common tools are listed in the chart below:

    Is there a dead front kit available for the TS 8?

    No, there is no standard DFK solution off-the-shelf.  Standard swing frames might be utilized or mounting panel hinge kits are available as specials.  Neither of these will give true touch safety out of the box.

    Can I use and industrial TS 8 in an IT application?

    Yes, 19” rails can be added to the industrial enclosure using a combination of 19” mounting angles and 19” installation system or system chassis.  The installation systems can be found beginning on page 592 of HB34.

    How is a TSFM enclosure different from a standard double door TS 8?

    The roof has additional internal fastening but still utilizes eyebolts.  The included sidewalls and rear walls are internally fastened.  The rear wall is also thicker at 2.0 mm versus 1.5 mm.  An internally fastened solid base plate is used in place of the standard gland plate configuration and 300 mm (12 inch) legs complete the assembly.

    What is the part number for the rails that come installed in the TS enclosure depth?

    What kind of steel does Rittal Corporation use in their enclosures?

    Rittal Corp. uses Cold Rolled Annealed Steel, Grade ASTM A1008. TS frames are manufactured from coil stock of Grade 40 (Type 1 or 2) structural steel. TS flat parts and other enclosures are manufactured from sheet steel stock of CS Type B cold-rolled steel.

    What is the difference between a Standard and a Certification?

    An agency, industry council or international commission writes a Standard, setting or detailing certain levels, applications or codes which a specific enclosure in a specific application must meet. A Certification is awarded by a specific testing agency, such as UL, CSA, TUV or ETL. They certify an enclosure meets a specific standard. UL 50: Standard for Enclosure for Electrical Equipment is a Standard. UL Type 12 is the Certification.

    What is the difference between NEMA and UL?

    NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) develops standards pertaining to the manufacture of electrical and medical imaging products. One such standard NEMA 250 – Enclosures for Electrical Equipment (1000 Volts Maximum) outlines testing methods for classifying enclosures into type ratings. This NEMA rating may be self-certified.

    UL (Underwriters Laboratories) is both a writer of standards and a NRTL (Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory). Like NEMA 250, UL 50: Standard for Enclosure for Electrical Equipment and UL 50E: Enclosures for Electrical Equipment, Environmental Consideration both outline testing methods for classifying enclosures into type ratings. This testing meets or exceeds the NEMA 250 standard and is certified by a NRTL (generally UL but other NRTLs such as Intertek or FM may certify to a UL standard).

    What is so special about the Rittal painting process?

    The painting process as a three phase system. Phase one is an eight stage pre-treatment of the metal, including a nano-ceramic (zirconium oxide) coating that is less harmful to the environment compared to traditional zinc phosphate conversion coatings. Phase two is an e-coat (electrophoretic deposition) primer, where the whole product is immersed into an electrically charged tank of primer. Rittal is the only enclosure manufacturer to feature this process. Phase three is the powder coat top finish.

    Can enclosures be repainted?

    Yes. First, the surface must be de-glossed. Using sandpaper, or a popular commercial product, Xylene, can do this. Once the surface has been de-glossed a new surface coat may be applied.

    Can enclosure withstand the curing process when powder-coating over the original finish?

    The foamed-in-place gasket can be baked up to 320° F (160° C) for 20 minutes or 350° F (177° C) for 15 minutes.

    Why galvanized mounting panels?

    There are many advantages to the hot dipped galvanized finish over standard painted surfaces including:

    A continuously bonded surface
    Assists in meeting EMI/RFI requirements
    Zinc offers high corrosion resistance
    Eliminates need to grind paint off for proper grounding.

    What is the temperature rating for Rittal enclosures?

    Most Rittal enclosures are manufactured using a polyurethane foamed-in-place gasket rated for -40° to 140°F (-40° to 60° C). Exceptions include Ex (FIP silicone), HD (one-piece silicone), and GA (neoprene cord seal).

    Does Rittal offer Zone (Seismic) rated enclosures?

    Since the fundamental dynamics of the enclosure are dependent upon the installation of user-specific equipment, a seismic certification is created for a specific configuration. Any change to that configuration will void the certification. As such Rittal does not offer ‘seismic certified‘ components or enclosures off the shelf. Rittal does offer, as proof of concept, third-party reports demonstrating the effective use of stiffening brackets to improve response spectra for seismic events.

    Many Rittal customers have tested their specific configurations to achieve qualifying results to several seismic standards including IBC, Telcordia GR-63CORE, OSHPD and CBC. Rittal has the engineering expertise to assist with your seismic applications, however if certification is a requirement then your specific application will necessitate a seismic test or analysis.“

    What enclosure configurations were examined as part of our proof of concept seismic tests?

    A standard 2000H x 800W x 600D industrial TS enclosure (8806500) with 100mm plinth (8601800 + 8602600) and 152 kg (334 lb.) on the backpanel was able to meet Bellcore Zones 1, 2, and 3 requirements.

    A standard 2000H x 800W x 600D industrial TS enclosure (8806500) equipped with a seismic upgrade kit (8613860) and seismic 100mm plinth (8601860) was able to meet Bellcore Zone 4 requirements with three different backpanel payloads – 250 kg (550 lb.), 350 kg (770 lb.), and 490 kg (1080 lb.).

    A standard 2000H x 600W x 600D industrial TS enclosure (8606500) equipped with a seismic upgrade kit (8613660) and seismic 100mm plinth (8601660) was able to meet Bellcore Zone 4 requirements with a 650 kg (1430 lb.) on the backpanel.

    A standard 2000H x 600W x 400D industrial TS enclosure (8604500) equipped with a seismic upgrade kit (8613640) and seismic 100mm plinth (8601640) was able to meet Bellcore Zone 4 requirements with a 650 kg (1430 lb.) on the backpanel.

    I need a CE mark on my enclosure, can I get it?

    Many of the Rittal global enclosure lines are marked CE and have declarations of comformity available for download on our website (please see the ‘approvals’ tab of the product page). These include EB, KL, AE, TS, etc.

    Those enclosures designed and sold specifically for the North American market such as JB, WM, TS (1600W, 1800W, FMD) etc. have no CE mark or declaration available. Since the vast majority of our customers do not send empty North American enclosures into the European Union, there has been no demand to justify investment in CE marking our enclosures. Once the empty enclosure has been modified the declaration of the final assembly must be made by the final equipment manufacturer in accordance with the applicable directive.

    All of the major enclosure manufacturers within North America have taken a similar stance.

    A CE declaration of conformity assists with the completion of design verifications for IEC 61439 (Low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies) however the lack of a CE declaration does not preclude compliance. Since all Rittal North American enclosures share the same mechanical and ingress protection properties of their global equivalents (e.g. WM = AE, JB = EB, TS = TS), those areas of concern can be verified via testing or assessment techniques using the existing approbation documents available on our website (e.g. TUV cert). Note however, that currently only the North American TS enclosures will come with a TUV mark on the product label – no such mark is provided for JB or WM enclosures.“

    Does Rittal offer explosion proof enclosures?

    Explosion proof is a much over-used term for enclosures used in hazardous locations. There are different types of hazardous environments and each of those environments has approved protection techniques for electrical installation. The use of explosion proof enclosures is only one such protection technique and then only needed for the most hazardous of environments. Rittal does not make an enclosure for this style of protection.

    Does Rittal offer enclosures for the hazardous location market?

    Many Rittal enclosures can be used within hazardous environments but it is important to differentiate between European, global, and US certifications.

    ATEX certified enclosures for use within the European Union bear a CE mark and have a certificate of conformity which outlines the defined ATEX equipment categories and Zone-classified environments for which the enclosure is approved. Rittal offers a global line of KEL enclosures that are ATEX approved for use in increased safety (eb), intrinsically safe (ia), and enclosure protected (tb) applications. Global stainless steel enclosures such AE and KL are acceptable for ATEX 3G and 3D equipment categories for use in Zone 2 and 22 environments for non-sparking applications. Global carbon steel AE and KL enclosure are acceptable for ATEX 3G equipment category for use in Zone 2 environments for non-sparking applications.

    IECEx certified enclosures are generally suitable for use in countries outside the US and European Union. These enclosures bear an ‘Ex’ mark and use the same Zone-classified system as ATEX. The aforementioned KEL enclosures are IECEx approved for use in increased safety (eb) and enclosure protected (tb) applications.

    Certified enclosures for use within the US come in one of two options based on how the environment is classified: Class/Zone classified or Class/Division classified. Equipment approved for Class/Zone classified environments within the US will have an ‘AEx’ mark. Class/Zone rated equipment may also be used in Class/Div classified locations however that equipment must bear this ‘AEx’ mark. Rittal does not offer any enclosures bearing this mark.

    Explosion proof enclosures for use within Class I Div 1 locations will bear a Type 7 rating. Dust-ignition proof enclosures for use within Class II Div 1 locations will bear a Type 9 rating. Each of these enclosures should be listed by a third party NRTL (Nationally Recognized Testing Lab). Rittal does not offer any enclosures that are listed to Type 7 or type 9.

    It is important to note however, not all Class/Division classified environments require ‘listed’ or certified enclosures. For instance, a general purpose enclosure may be used in a Class I Div 1 or Class II Div 1 environment provided it is paired with a purge or pressurized system. Also, there is no such thing as a Class I Div 2 enclosure. Depending on the protection technique, general purpose enclosures may be valid for this environment. For example, general purpose enclosures are safe for use in Class I Div 2 environments for non-sparking applications. General purpose dust-tight enclosures are safe for use in Class II Division 2 environments for non-sparking applications. General purpose dust-tight enclosures are safe for use in Class III environments.

    Are Rittal enclosures suitable for use with purge systems?

    Yes, we recommend the use of NEMA 4 or 4X enclosures such that the leakage rate is reduced to a minimum. The operating pressure of the purge vent should be no more than 0.2” water column. For 900 mm (36 in.) wide AE/WM enclosures we recommend extra quarter turn latches be added to the top and bottom of the door.

    Are any Rittal enclosures arc flash rated?

    No, there is no such thing as an arc flash rated enclosure. NFPA 70E: Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace sets guidelines for worker safety including the use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and lockout-tagout procedures. Although this is an employer mandate that does not apply to enclosure manufacturers, Rittal has taken the initiative to provide solutions to minimize workers’ exposure to live electrical equipment. Window kits allow visual inspection of components and data ports allow access to critical systems information without opening the doors to the enclosure. Careful control system designs utilizing divider panels and door interlocking ensure line-side voltage is kept separate from load-side cables and low-voltage controls are kept separate from high voltage power, allowing maintenance to be performed without exposing workers to dangerous situations.

    How long is Rittal’s’ warranty?

    Rittal warrants our air conditioners, chillers, and heat exchangers to be free of defect in workmanship, materials, and components for (24) months from date of manufacture.

    Why are there such variances between manufacturers when it comes to cooling capacities?

    There is not a standard way of measuring in North America and manufacturers may use various methods to determine their output.  However, in Europe, the DIN EN 14511 standard (Air Conditioners, liquid chilling packages and heat pumps with electrically driven compressors for space heating and cooling)  is used to determine cooling capacity.  The standard uses 50 Hz and internal enclosure temperature of 35°C and 35°C ambient. Rittal’s air conditioners have been certified by TUV to meet DIN EN 14511 at the capacities we state

    I see the total cooling output 50/60 HZ L35 L35. What does L35 L35 mean?

    The first L35 represents an internal enclosure temperature of 35°C (95°F). The second L35 represents the ambient air. You may also see L35/L50 which is 35°C (95°F) internal enclosure temperature and 50°C (122°F) ambient temperature. However, DIN 14511 tests at L35/L35

    How do I determine the heat loss within an enclosure?

    You must determine what components will be in the enclosure and add the heat loss for each of the items. Many times you can get the heat loss for drives the manufacturers’ technical data.  For example, an enclosure with (14) soft start drives and a 90% efficient 15 HP motor inside, what is the heat loss? Reviewing the manufacturer’s manual for the starts tells us the heat loss is 177W (177W * 14 = 2,478W).  The heat loss for the motor is listed as 1,313W.

    So, 1,313W + 2,478 W = 3,791W heat loss for this enclosure. You may now use this number when using Therm.

    What is Short Circuit Current Rating, SCCR, for Rittal Air Conditioners?

    It has been determined by UL to be 5 kA at their rated voltage level.

    What is shortest recommended distance between cooling units?

    The distance of the cooling units from one another and from the wall should be at least 200 mm.

    Can I use any filter material?

    No. Rittal’s filter fans have been tested with our specific filters. To maintain UL/IP ratings, a Rittal filter must be used. Additionally, Rittal’s filters meet DIN 5343B Class F1; they are self-extinguishing and will not inflame into the enclosure.

    What is the expected life of a fan?

    There are many environmental factors that affect the life of a fan to include how dusty/oily is the environment and are the filters changed regularly. Depending on the size, a customer could expect 40,000 – 72,000 hours. (See Service Life letter for specific model)

    Why are there such variances between air flow (CFM) comparing Rittal to competitors’ fans?

    Different companies rate their flow based on different parameters. Several of our competitors rate it based on not using a filte. It is unlikely a fan would be used without a filter so this is an unrealistic number. Rittal rates all of our products as they would actually be used—with a filter.
